چکیده
duced lymphoid tumors exhibit a tendency to arise in the thymus gland. Furth and his associ ates (1, 8) found that the incidence of spontaneous lymphomas in a susceptible strain was sharply re duced after thymectomy. Subsequently, Kaplan (4) and Law and Miller (6, 7) reported a similar influence of thymectomy on lyinphoma develop ment under other experimental conditions. Furth (1) and Kaplan (4) attributed this phenomenon simply to removal of the tissue of maximal sus ceptibility. However, Law and Miller (6, 7) re ported that the incidence of lymphoid tumors could be restored to essentially normal levels in thymectomized mice by autologous or homologous subcutaneous thymic implants, suggesting that the thymus may be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease in an additional role, possibly of endo cnine nature. In all these investigations, thymectomy was performed before exposure to the tumor-inciting agent, or, in the spontaneous lymphoma studies, at a time when the endogenous agents were pre sumably still active. Moreover, Law and Miller implanted their thymic grafts prior to the start of carcinogen application ; thymic tissue was there fore present in the animal during exposure. It seemed of interest to study the effect on lymphoid tumor incidence of thymectomy at vary ing intervals after irradiation and to determine whether homologous thymic tissue implanted after irradiation can restore the lymphoma susceptibil ity of thymectomized mice. This paper is con cerned with two such experiments.

Influence of Thymectomy and Subsequent Thymus Implantation on Leukemia Induction in Adult C57BL Mice by Radiation and Urethan1
A single exposure of adult C57BL/6 mice to 400 r total-body X-irradiation yielded 5% leukemia; thymectomy reduced the incidence to zero, while subsequent implantation of normal thy mus reversed the process. Subsequent urethan treatment raised the incidence in nonthymectomized, irradiated mice to 34% and in thymectomized, irradiated, and thymus-implanted mice to 17%. When the thymus implant was ...

متن کاملThe effect of melatonin on Superoxide dismutase and Glutathione peroxidase activity, and Malondialdehyde levels in the targeted and the non-targeted lung and heart tissues after irradiation in xenograft mice colon cancer
Introduction: Introduction: Radiation causes damage to irradiated tissues and also tissues that do not receive direct irradiation through a phenomenon called bystander effects. Melatonin as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent is known for protection of normal tissues against ionizing irradiation. In addition, some studies have suggested that Melatonin may have some...

Background: After radiation therapy (RT), some health hazards including DNA damages may occur where melatonin can play a protective role due to free radical generation. On the other hand, serious accidental overexposures may occur during RT due to nuclear accidents which necessitate the need for study on exposure to high-dose radiations during treatments. Objective: The aim of this study was to ...
